Police officers and detectives are the most common and well known of all criminal justice professionals. You can always see their roles played out in various television shows. Uniformed police officers’ duties vary depending on the size of the municipality for which they work for. For example, in a small police force, an officer might be called upon to handle all aspects of the job—from patrolling to doing paperwork. In larger police force job requirements are normally more specialized.
Detectives collect evidence at crimes scenes. Their jobs are to investigate the scene, interview people, search through documents, and make arrests. In most cases, their expertise is in investigating certain types of crimes such as homicide or fraud. At smaller police force departments, one detective may be dedicated to serve all functions for the department.
The job of probation officers are to supervise people who have been sentenced to probation. The probation field employs probation officers, correctional treatment specialists, and juvenile officers. These probation officers specialize in the issues of juveniles, deal with people placed on probation, or deal with people serving time in jail or prison. They must ensure that the people on probation are meeting the obligations of their sentencing. This usually means regularly meeting with the individuals in their homes or in a correctional facility.
In most cases correctional officer and security guard jobs do not require a college degree, unless the job involves a supervisory position. Most of the correctional officers work as guards at state and federal prisons. Security guards carry out duties such as patrolling industrial sites, shopping malls, private property, and other sites to prevent acts of theft, vandalism, and other illegal activities. These two types of positions generally require a high school certificate and a clean personal record. However, career advancement in these two professions often require a college degree.
